When credit unions speak up, Congress listens. Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) proved that in a recent U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing. During the hearing, which aimed to scrutinize the operations and fee structures of various industries, Chairman Brown pointed out a crucial distinction. Unlike many big banks, credit unions maintain a more consumer-friendly approach. Specifically, Senator Brown noted that Ohio credit unions do a better job informing and serving members with responsible overdraft protection programs, unlike other industries that have come under fire for excessive and opaque “junk fees.”

As Ohio credit unions continue to navigate a challenging political landscape that is attacking fees of all types and amounts, the affirmation by Chairman Brown provides an encouraging signal. Decision-makers know that Ohio credit unions are a vital part of the banking community, dedicated to serving all people, families, businesses, and communities.
