Elected officials must hear from Movement advocates to ensure credit union interests remain a focus in important conversations. When high-profile seats are filled, ongoing communication is critical given the wide range of individuals who seek influence with elected officials. This week, former Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted was sworn in as U.S. Senator following his appointment by Gov. DeWine, filling the vacancy created by Vice President J.D. Vance’s resignation. Sen. Husted has worked in public service since he was elected State Representative in 2000. A shining example of local politicians moving onto bigger roles, Husted served in several Ohio leadership roles as Speaker of the House, State Senator, and Secretary of State, before serving alongside Governor DeWine beginning in 2019.
He brings extensive expertise in the financial services industry, having served on the board of directors for Heartland Bank. In June 2024, the League welcomed Husted for a dialogue with credit union leaders from across Ohio. This meeting provided an opportunity to address key challenges, explore his priorities—particularly around workforce transformation in Ohio—and highlight the vital role credit unions play in their communities. The League is working on engaging with the Senator in his new position to continue fostering collaboration.
