Harper and Otsuka fired from NCUA Board

Having a strong, focused, credit union dedicated regulator is a vital spoke in the wheel that is the Credit Union Movement. However, the NCUA Board entered unchartered territory on Wednesday when President Trump fired Board Members Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka. With Chairman Hauptman’s term ending later this year, this scenario at the Board level is unprecedented. Under the Federal Credit Union Act, without at least two members on the board, the NCUA cannot implement any new action. However, the agency can still perform its supervisory and examination duties.

The NCUA Board has already canceled the meeting scheduled for today; moreover, it remains unclear what can be accomplished by a one-member Board. The League is still working to understand the immediate and longer-term impact. As we learn more, you’ll be the first to know.
