League advocates against amendments to federal spending bill

In a gridlocked Congress, must-pass federal spending bills open an opportunity to accomplish policy initiatives that can either promote or inhibit credit unions from serving their members. That’s why the League asked Congressman Mike Turner (R-Dayton), a senior member on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, to avoid policy distractions and support funding a strong, national defense during the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) consideration process. The League was concerned amendments non-germane to defense spending, like credit card interchange or military banking-related policies, could impact credit union operations and jeopardize the ability to fund national defense. The Committee, including Congressman Turner, ultimately agreed and passed the NDAA on May 22 without any amendments, funding our country’s military programming without policies impacting credit unions and their members.
