Credit union advocacy strength is built by the willingness of Ohio credit unions to go above and beyond to advocate for 3.2 million Ohioans. Last week, 39 leaders from 26 credit unions joined the League, Corporate One FCU, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati, and American Share Insurance and Excess Share Insurance in meeting with NCUA Board Chairman Todd Harper, Senators Sherrod Brown and J.D. Vance, and members of the Ohio Congressional Delegation.

While we experienced great camaraderie and networking, we also achieved important outcomes during 2023 Hike the Hill. We left our meeting with Chairman Harper encouraged by his willingness to cultivate a relationship where the regulator and regulated collaborate on safety and soundness. We emphasized to Senator Brown how the Credit Card Competition Act of 2023 will hurt consumers and learned that we can expect a SAFE Banking Act committee markup on Sept. 27.

We need your help telling members of Congress that the SAFE Banking Act will help keep communities safe by allowing credit unions to serve cannabis-related businesses through bright-line guidance and safe harbor provisions. Click here to send a message through Voter Voice to your U.S. House and Senate members ahead of the Sept. 27 markup.

If your credit union is interested in advocating for its members in Washington, D.C., register for the 2024 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) March 3-7, 2024. The League will provide more information on housing and the Ohio agenda in the coming weeks.
