On Thursday, Oct. 19, the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs held a confirmation hearing for several appointments, including Tanya Otsuka, to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) board. Tanya is currently the Counsel for the Committee and works closely with U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) on credit union policy issues.

Regarding climate risk for credit unions, Otsuka stated that regulators should trust that credit unions understand and manage risks to serve members and preserve access to capital. She is committed to keeping an open line of communication with stakeholders to make informed decisions and ensure credit unions follow the law and manage risks for safety and soundness.

The Committee is expected to favorably support Tanya’s NCUA Board nomination soon, with an anticipated U.S. Senate Floor vote in November. Upon her anticipated successful appointment, the League and Ohio credit unions will engage directly with Tanya to learn her regulatory priorities and how they align with credit union needs in her new NCUA Board capacity.
