NCUA moves forward regardless of legal challenges

A regulator that is predictable, fair, and mission-focused is vitally important to the ultimate safety and soundness of the Credit Union Movement. That is why the League has taken particular interest in the historic changes taking place at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Specifically, last Thursday was the first official NCUA Board meeting with Kyle Hauptman serving as not only the Chairman of the Board, but also the only Board member. Chairman Hauptman highlighted several key components of the future of the agency and its operation:
- The Share Insurance Fund remains strong (1.3%)
- Net income, total assets, and total reserves are all up from Q4 2024
- The Voluntary Separation Programs are nearing their end with approximately 250 employees participating (employees in the program will go on administrative leave, but will remain on payroll until 12/31/25)
- The Board is anticipating approximately $75 million in total savings
- The NCUA’s goals will continue to be to foster competition, remove barriers to growth, and serve as a strong, primary insurer of credit unions
All of these points are in alignment with the goals laid out by the Chairman earlier this year, but it cannot go without noting that what the NCUA is able to do, change, or implement continues to be in question as former board members Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka have initiated legal action regarding their termination by the President earlier this year. The League will continue to monitor that lawsuit and how it may impact NCUA function, as well as Board composition.
