Credit union advocacy strength is built by the willingness of Ohio credit unions to go above and beyond to advocate for 3.2 million members. Last week, dozens of credit union leaders joined the League, Corporate One FCU, Elan Advisory Services, and American Share Insurance and Excess Share Insurance in meeting with CFPB Director Rohit Chopra, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and the Ohio congressional delegation to achieve the following outcomes:
- CFPB Director Rohit Copra applauded credit unions for prioritizing member relationship banking and discussed how to avoid the “junk fee” narrative through transparent, reasonable, and competitive services.
- Senator Sherrod Brown, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, praised credit unions for serving unmet community needs and acknowledged how Congress can do more to better serve people through financial cooperatives.
- Ohio’s U.S. House of Representatives delegation shared how the current interchange system works and that consumer data protection should be paramount for financial institutions and retailers alike.
If your credit union is interested in advocating for its members in Washington, D.C., register for the 2023 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Feb. 26 – Mar. 2, 2023. The League will provide more information on housing and the Ohio agenda in the coming weeks.
