Attracting and retaining top talent is indeed a significant challenge for any organization, and small credit unions face unique nuances in this regard. Limited budgets and time constraints make it even more crucial for small credit unions to effectively manage their human resources activities, organizational culture, and hiring process to compete in the war for talent.

To address these challenges, small credit unions should leverage their competitive advantages and highlight them throughout the talent journey. Emphasizing the mission and value-driven culture of the credit union is essential in attracting and retaining talent. Highlight the opportunity for employees to make a direct impact on the members and communities they serve, which can be a strong motivating factor for potential candidates. Additionally, emphasize the skill-building opportunities that small-staffed organizations can provide, as employees in such environments often have the chance to take on diverse responsibilities and gain valuable experience.

As a member of the League, you have access to various resources that can support your talent management efforts. The Talent Strategy Guide provides valuable insights and strategies for attracting, selecting, and retaining talent. The League’s website hosts a job board where you can advertise your job openings to reach a wider pool of candidates. Additionally, HR Suite offers job descriptions and supportive information to assist you in the hiring process.

To help with talent retention, the League offers staff onboarding videos tailored to credit unions. These videos can help new employees understand the unique aspects of credit unions and foster a sense of belonging and engagement. Furthermore, the League provides virtual and in-person educational offerings to support the ongoing development and growth of your staff.

By leveraging these resources and emphasizing the mission, culture, and growth opportunities within your small credit union, you can enhance your ability to attract and retain top talent.
